25 foreign goods got NS mark last fiscal

Kathmandu, August 5

The government issued Nepal Standard (NS) quality certification to 25 foreign goods available in domestic market in the last fiscal year.

According to the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM), 25 goods manufactured by 20 Indian and Chinese firms have been provided with the NS certification in fiscal 2017-18.

NBSM has issued the NS certification to 13 cement brands, two brands of composite cylinders, three brands of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, three LPG valves, three iron bars and a regulator brand. The NS certification accredited goods include Star Cements, Saluja Steels, Surya Shakti Vessels, Sarba Mangal Petroleum, Tata Steel, Supreme E-Pipe and Time Techno Plast, among others.

Though a majority of countries have been issuing quality certification to Nepali goods since many years, Nepal formally started issuing NS quality certification to foreign goods only since last fiscal year.

“The number of foreign brands seeking NS certification has increased in recent months. We have been issuing quality certification to all foreign goods meeting certain set criteria,” informed Bishwo Babu Pudasaini, director general at NBSM.

In April last year, government had made it mandatory for 12 imported products to acquire NS certification in a bid to protect consumers.
