Govt to introduce new NEA Act

KATHMANDU: The government has informed that it is planning to introduce a new Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Act, which will replace the existing NEA Act 1984.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Barsha Man Pun, informed that the ministry has already prepared a draft of the act, which be made public soon for further discussions.

Minister Pun said that the draft will also be forwarded to the provinces and concerned stakeholders to receive feedback and suggestions. “The existing NEA Act was introduced decades ago, so we plan to bring the new act as soon as possible so as to address the present scenario when the country is being governed under the federal system.”

He also informed that the new act will have a provision to allocate shares of NEA to the public. Minister Pun further said the government will hold meetings with the energy ministers of Bangladesh and India to discuss power trade.
