KATHMANDU: Popular folk rock band Nepathya on Saturday evening performed to a packed audience at the ground of Kalika School in Butwal with a new theme ‘Music for Unity’. The concert lasted for two hours from 6:30 pm.

Nepathya front man Amrit Gurung recalled the band's musical tour across the country during the conflict period. "We had performed at this ground in 2003 during the day, as it was unthinkable to do a show after dark during those times,” he said.

"Being able to perform a show at this hour is a sign of peace being reinstated. I appeal to all people and parties not to take back this luxury from us,” the singer said.

Nepathya performed its new song ‘Kuroop Anuhar’ to the music lovers to kick start the concert and proceeded to the popular number ‘Bheda ko Oon jasto’,  which was offered with special effect of snowfall. Likewise, Nepathya's classic hits ‘Chhekyo Chhekyo’ and ‘Anganai bhari’, and latest release Sirfula were performed subsequently.

As usual, Gurung shared his views and other tidbits with the audience during the concert.

“The place where you are living today (Butwal) was a transit point of our salt trade route. Traders from the mountains travelled to the plains to sell salt and would buy essentials for their loved ones,” he said.

“The market from those days of churā [bangles] and dhāgo [decorative thread for hair] have now elaborated to this level and I wish Butwal for all the success it is heading for," he added.

After performing Chari Maryo, Jomsome Bazāra, Koshi ko pāni and Hāmi Nepāli, Gurung appealed, “During this time of transition, there will be many elements trying to break our harmony and divide us. We need to stay intact and maintain our resilience and unity.”

Referring to the upcoming local elections, he did not miss an opportunity to urge the public to unite "for the sake of development".

He then went on to sing Shyam Tamot’s Ralfa song Gaun Gaun bata utha, a song Nepathya has been performing on stage for many years now, according to a statement issued by Nepa~laya that has been managing Nepathya events.

As it grew darker, the stage looked brighter not only with the lights choreographed to add to the visual treat for the Butwal audience, but with the synergy the band built with the audience, the statement said. Resham, Tāl ko Pāni were obvious numbers to be included in the set list.

The crowd went frenzy with any song the band performed and anything Amrit said, according to Nepa~laya.

“For a city to grow, it needs to accept people of all cast, creed and religion. Butwal has shown the traits, may you all remain united and prosper. Whatever you do, keep our national integrity intact and keep our national pride, our flag above everything else,” Gurung said and concluded the show with Gopal Prasad Rimal's Rāto ra Chandra Surya , with the entire crowd joining him in applause.

The event was organised by Butwal-based Yes Nepal, and aimed at raising funds for Nepal Child Home.
