Bandh hits Pokhara‚ more shutdowns on cards
POKHARA: It’s bandhs in the time of tourism year.
While some parts of the country are already feeling the heat, there are strikes and closures on the cards.
While normal life across the western region was affected by a strike called by Chhetri Samaj Nepal today, Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities has announced Nepal bandh on Friday. CSN enforced the bandh today, and it is planning to impose yet another shutdown in Far Western and two districts (Surkhet and Dailekh) in Mid Western Region tomorrow, demanding that the constitution enlist the Chhetris as indigenous group in the new constitution. NEFIN is seeking an end to all forms of discrimination.
Tourism entrepreneurs fear that efforts to draw one million tourists during Nepal Tourism Year-2011 will go down the drain. The bandh in Pokhara today comes at a time when one of the best tourist hubs is at the peak of tourist season that begins in March and lasts till May.
The Lake City had coped with the Taxi Entrepreneurs’ Committee-enforced chakkajam on April 27 and 28, which followed the CSN’s bandh today. The bandh had its effect in 16 districts of Gandaki (of which Pokhara is a part), Dhaulagiri and Lumbini zones.
Pokhara Tourism Council Chairman and Operator of Fujiyam Treks and Expedition Tikaram Sapkota fears such strikes may lead to the cancellation of bookings.
Further, with the US travel advisory, issued after UNMIN’s exit, portraying Nepal as a not-so-safe-a-destination has tourism entrepreneurs much worried. The tourism entrepreneurs have called on all concerned, including the political parties, not to organise strikes.
Nonetheless, it’s bandhs in the time of potential political upheaval as well.

Comment:
If this is meant to advise tourists about visiting Nepal this year, then this is a blessing for tourists who slog throughout the year to come for a holiday to our cursed country Nepal, only to suffer |

I work in the tour and travel industry. Many of our clients that are dying to visit Nepal have changed their mind to go on a trip to Nepal in 2011. Who wants to come to Nepal and be forced to stay in the hotel or walk to the airport. How stupid as well a waste of time and energy. Most people in America have 2 - 3 weeks vacation, so they want to get the max for their buck, if you know what I mean. So, here is the point. Thanks to Nepali leaders and politicians, that Visit Nepal 2011 is a joke. Its a bad idea. Its a waste of time and money. Its a disgrace. Keep it up, and instead of 1 million - you may not have even 100 tourist come to Nepal. Way to go. |

Despite the politican stalemate, Nepal is still a beautiful country to visit, I have found many British people willing to see a glimpse of Mt. Everest or hike to Annapurna, or explore culture of Nepal, so kindly do not compare Nepal with rotten apple, its image is often stands as Shangri-La on earth. |

NTY2011 is like trying to sell a rotten apple to people who can afford to buy a wide range of high quality fruits from elsewhere. Nepal Tourism Board should have been realistic instead of idealistic. Does NTB realise that NTY2011 is now becoming a joke and an embarrassment in front of rest of the world??!! Thanks to all the political parties for their contribution and role in this. |
