'Cooperatives can play key role in poverty alleviation'

BHAIRAHAWA: Minister for Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Eknath Dhakal today stressed the importance of cooperatives sector for poverty alleviation in the country.

Addressing a press meet at the Radio Lumbini, run by the Lumbini Information and Cooperatives Ltd, Dhakal shared the experience about his five-year strategic plan for the development of cooperatives sector.

According to him, conscious citizens have a key role to play in the cooperatives movement. About 3.5 million people have been involved to make it achievement oriented. Stating that there was no alternative to consensus in Nepal's politics, he appealed all parties to be united and pointed out that the one-third budget was brought in consensus of the parties.

Radio Lumbini chairman Dr Ghimire, Chief Executive Krishna Prasad Nepal and various personalities including Bhim Tulachan, Kulananda Gyawali, Top Narayan Panta, Parshuram Sapkota, Deepak Gyawali, Bharat KC and Khimananda Bhattarai also expressed their views during the programme.

Minister Dhakal also inspected Radio Lumbini's office and lauded the role played by the radio in assisting in community development. On the occasion, Dr Ghimire also drew the attention of the minister on the problems faced by the radio in paying 30 per cent income tax.
