CHITWAN: Vice-chairperson of the CPN-UML Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that ethnic federalism would lead country towards conflict.
“There should be no more than seven federal states and the state restructuring should not be carried out on ethnic lines,” said Bhandari while felicitating Lekhnath Bhattarai, a leader of democratic movement in Bharatpur on Tuesday.
According to Bhandari, the number of federal units should be determined on the basis of consensus.
Saying that the CPN-UML's federal affairs department has also recommended carving seven to eight federal states, Bhandari said that creating many states in the name of CPN-UML is not the party's official line.
On the occasion, she also alleged the UCPN-Maoist and the Madhes-based parties of trying to push the country to a fresh conflict by fanning the fire of ethnic states.
