KATHMANDU: National Pressure Group against Tobacco, Nepal has submitted a memorandum to Finance Minister demanding an increase in tax on tobacco businesses.The government should increase the tax as per its commitment made in Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the group said in a statement.
PIL against bandh
KATHMANDU: Demanding an order to bring a strict anti-bandh ordinance, advocate Bhoj Bahadur KC filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) at the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Law and Justice have been made the defendants in the petition. According to the petition, Nepal has witnessed 128 days of nationwide, district and regional bandhs following May, 2011, involving at least 226 groups.
Fraud arrested
KATHMANDU: Police on Wednesday arrested Mina Rai (30) of Sindhuli on the charge of selling gold-plaited ornaments in the name of genuine gold jewelleries in Kapurdhara area. Officials said they caught the woman while she was duping people.
House burgled
KATHMANDU: A gang broke into the house of Janak Sharma in Ratopul on Tuesday and decamped with cash and gold jewelleries valued at Rs 6.46 lakh. According to a complaint lodged with police, the gang robbed Rs 2.5 lakh, gold ornaments weighing three tolas, a laptop computer, a camera and 10 pieces of sarees.
