DIKTEL: Congress president Sushil Koirala today said a democratic constitution would be promulgated by the Nepali Congress-led government.

Speaking at a press meet organised by the Nepal Press Union in Khotang, Koirala claimed that a national consensus government would be formed soon under the leadership of his party. He opined that the there could be an end to the current problems confronting the country only by consensus and the co-operation of all political party.

Responding to a query from mediapersons, the Congress leader clarified that there is no disagreement whatsoever as far as the NC’s prime ministerial candidate was concerned, adding, “Our party has clear policy that the parliamentary leader will be the candidate of the PM.”

Koirala claimed that the constitution would be promulgated in time as the UCPN-Maoist has come to the main path of peace process adding, “Ever since the dual army structure has ended, the chances for promulgating the constitution has become brighter.”

On the issue of state restructuring, Koirala said political parties have almost agreed on major issues. Stressing on that there is no alternative to promulgate the statute by May 27, he said, “We reached Hattiban in search of a tranquil place to discuss the issues of constitution.”

According to him political parties would move ahead on drafting the statute as per the agreements reached at Hattiban. Koirala alleged that the statute-drafting and peace process were delayed due to the UCPN-Maoist.

However, Koirala appreciated the efforts made by Baburam Bhattarai-led government to take the peace process towards conclusion.
