DHULIKHEL: A family from Kavre suffering from a rare genetic condition in which hair grows all over the face, giving the patients a “werewolf-like” appearance, have started receiving treatment from today.
The Sundas family from Kusadevi are in Dhulikhel Hospital, which has promised to treat them for free, after news about their inability to seek treatment –– due to poverty –– was reported in the media.
Salikgram Sundas, his sister Goma and his seven-month-old daughter Ashika will have excessive hair removed with help of laser surgery, said doctors at the hospital. Salikram and Goma also have another condition –– their jaws are growing out of their mouth.
“Dhulikhel Hospital was established to serve the poor. We will provide free treatment for the Sundas family,” said the hospital administrative chief Dr Rajendra Konju.
Technicians today ran blood tests, video x-ray, dental and jaw checks on Goma and Salikgram today. The hospital’s chief dermatologist Dr Dharmendra Karna said the conditions were hereditary in nature.
“We will remove excessive black hair using laser surgery but there is very low chance that the white hair on Goma and Salikgram can be removed. Laser does not work on white hair,” he added.
“The Minor’s treatment would be complete after six to eight laser surgeries,” said Dr Karna. The hospital’s dental programme coordinator Dr Chandan Upadhaya said that the jaw treatment would be done by surgery as it was not cancerous.
