KATHMANDU: At least 34 people have been found dead after a bus ferrying Bol Bam pilgrims fell into the Gandak canal in Triveni of Nawalparasi on Sunday, Superintendent of Police Gyan Bahadur Shah told Mountain TV over telephone.
Earlier, News24 had reported that 25 bodies were recovered from the bush crash site. While our Nawalparasi-based reporter Shreeram Sigdel said that the bus was heading to Bardaghat from Triveni but the number of victims is yet to be verified.
According to Shah, the bus (with registration number Lu1Kha 2356) is still in the swollen canal and the death toll is likely to rise.
The rescue operation is underway. Security personnel from the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force are involved in rescue operation.
None of the victims have been identified yet.
He said that the number of passengers on board the bus was not clear.
Referring to some passengers who have survived, SP Shah said the driver was drunk while behind the wheels.
