SURKHET: Three dozen VDCs in Surkhet district still do not have access to electricity service.

More than 100,000 people of 20 VDCs in east and 16 VDCs in the west of the district are living in darkness since they lack access to electricity.

They have been compelled to use kerosene lamps as an alternative to electricity.

Some of the locals have been using solar panels.

Locals of the eastern area, who were hopeful of getting electricity service, have been dejected after construction works on the main electricity transmission line from Chhinchu in the district to Khalanga of Jajarkot district is stalled.

Jay Bahadur BK of BabiyachaurVDC-1 said that Chaukune Cement Factory, the biggest factory in the western areas in the district, has not come into operation due to lack of electricity.

He added that they have now lost hope of getting access to electricity as the leaders of political parties and representatives of different NGOs only deliver empty words and the government bodies do not pay heed towards their plight.

It is said around one and half dozen tourist sites in the district including Chamere Gufa, Dahatal, Dovanchaur of Ghat Gaun, Tidugana Gufa, Deuti Bajai, among others are living under darkness due to lack of electricity service.
