NEPALGUNJ: Some 85,000 people are illiterate in Banke district, according to a data released at a programme organized on the occasion of the National Education Day and the International Illiteracy Day on Saturday.
Chief at the District Education Office, Bhakta Bahadur Dhakal said among the illiterate ones, the women are 50,469 while men are 34,615.
Of the total 504,548 population, there were 176,255 women and 212,632 men literate in the district till the last fiscal year.
It was pointed out in the statistics that if 20,000 people are made literate every year, the government's goal of eradicating illiteracy by 2015 would be achieved.
In order to reach the goal, the government needs to revamp education policy, make the monitoring mechanism effective and address the needs of teacher, solve the problems of appointments of local teachers and others.
