MEGAN TITELY
As Russians have their Vodka, so too do Nepalis have their Raksi. Nepalis are some of the most persuasive people I know. They can make you eat mountains of Dahl Bhat, they can make you pay far too much for a Yak Yak Yak T-shirt and they can convince you to drink Raksi, more than you’d ever think you were capable of. (Frankly, two sips is more than I thought I was capable of, it is SO strong and nasty tasting!). After a lot of thought I’ve come to the conclusion that I think that Nepalis are persuasive mostly because they are being welcoming or hospitable, also they talk so much and don’t give you the chance to refuse or argue them into reason. A simple, ‘I am full,’ or, ‘this Raksi is so strong it tastes like it could take paint off walls’ doesn’t have any meaning to them. Language doesn’t really even come into it. I was served up some Raksi into a plastic cup from a Karuwa. (The Nepali equivalent of a, decanter). My face contorted every time I took a sip despite knowing what was coming... —megantitley.blogspot
