KATHMANDU: Vice-president of CPN-UML affiliated All Nepal National Free Students Union, Amrit Science Campus, Basant Shahi (25) succumbed to a bullet injury while undergoing treatment at TU Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj today, police said.
The 25-year-old student leader was critically injured in the neck in accidental firing. It is believed his friend shot him inside a rented room in Sorhakhutte on June 8.
According to police investigation, a US-made pistol accidentally went off as Manoj Khatri (26), a former student of the campus, was demonstrating how to use his illegally possessed weapon. The bullet had hit Shahi at point-blank range.
The incident took place in the rented room of Bir Bahadur Rawat (29), vice-president of Free Students’ Union and ANNFSU leader of the campus.
Shahi, Khatri and Mukesh Nepali (24), all third year bachelor’s students, had stayed overnight in the rented room.
Khatri was play acting with the loaded pistol and demonstrating how to operate and aim the weapon before he pulled the trigger.
Police have arrested Rawat and Nepali, and charged them with attempt to murder. With Shahi’s death, police are preparing to file murder charge against Rawat and Nepali.
Khatri, also an ANNFSU cadre, is the main accused and is at large.
