JHAPA: Jhapa district administration used force to stop a peace rally in Chandragadhi taken out by the Joint Struggle Committee calling for social harmony and ethnic goodwill, resulting in tension.
The joint struggle team comprising Brahmins, Chhetris, Dasnamis, Thakuris and dalits among others, were staging a rally for keeping the nation intact and for maintaining ethnic unity with the demand that federal states should not be formed on the basis of ethnicity in the new constitution and to implement the agreement reached between the committee and the government.
Tension ran high when the rally that started from Lekhnath Chowk was stopped by police in Chndragadhi’s Trade Union chowk. There was a clash between police and the protestors that lasted for around two hours.
After that, protestors chanted slogans against the Home Minister and Jhapa administration.
Speakers warned they would stage different struggle programmes if the statute was not promulgated by midnight.The struggle committee’s eastern regional coordinator Khadga Bahadur Khadka, Jhapa coordinator Harka Lal Giri, Brahmin Society Jhapa Chairperson Dhanapati Bhattarai, Khas-Chhetri United Society, Jhapa Chairperson Dilendra Karki, among others spoke at the programme.
