KATHMANDU: Vice-President Parmanand Jha has said all languages spoken in Nepal were the national languages.

At a programme organised to mark the first anniversary of a Hindi monthly magazine, The Public, in the capital on Friday, Vice-President Jha said Hindi language should be respected because it is as developed as the Nepali language.

On the occasion, Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Jayant Prasad, said Hindi is a contact language in the South Asia.

Nepal and Hindi languages have close links as the members of a same family, he argued.

Editor Bina Singha said it was very difficult to do journalism in Hindi language.

At the programme, Vice-President Jha honoured Gauri Shankar Lal Das, Ram Dayal Rakesh, Dr Rajendra Bimal, Yougendra Saha, Mamata Jha, Tara Chauhan, Bishnu Reddy and others.

When one indian meets another Indian they don't speak in Hindi. Indiam Ambassador should know that Indians always speak in English. So it's foolish for him to say that Hindi is a contact language in South Asia. In Nepal we should recognise all the languages spoken in Nepal but Nepali should be the official language. Hindi is not the national language of Nepal. It is not any of the languages spoken in Nepal. Vice-President Parmanand Jha should understand that if every language spoke in Nepal is the national language than every official publication and proclamation of the government will then have to be translated into all of those languages. This is absurd on the face of it. Nepali is the national language and there are a number of sub-dialects spoken throughout the land. Hindi is merely a similar language which is handy to know if one converses with Indians in Nepal who are handicapped by language barrier. In other words, ignorant Indians. No Nepali would go to India thinking that Indians should speak Nepali. We see the overbearing nature of of arrogant Indians in this very regard. Suraj Rajbhandhari, Putali Sadak, Kathmandu
