KATHMANDU: The Bagmati River Festival began today with an objective of raising public awareness and launching initiatives for cleaner rivers in the Valley.
‘Green Kathmandu, Clean Bagmati’ is the slogan for this year’s festival. The programmes began at the Aryaghat in Pashupatinath area today, said Nepal River Conservation Trust, the organiser.
Participants had mixed clean water from various rivers into the Bagmati to inaugurate the festival that will last 75 days. The Bisnumati river will also be cleaned up during the festival launched 11 years ago to rid the Valley rivers of solid waste and sewage. Activists will participate in a cycle rally and go rafting on the rivers. They will also run a campaign against the use of plastic bags and raise awareness among the public on the rivers.
