SIMARA: Bara and Rautahat advanced to the quarter-finals of the 14th National Ncell Women’s Football Championship here today.
In Simara, co-hosts Bara defeated Kanchanpur 2-0 on goals from Sapana Basnet and Sapana Gole. Sapana Basnet headed home following a corner from Laxmi Thapa to put Bara ahead in the 25th minute. Bara — who enjoyed huge local support — put Kanchanpur under pressure after taking an early lead. The scorer then assisted for Sapana Gole as the local side doubled the tally in the 38th minute.
Kanchanpur were a better side after the break but could not find the back of the nets, thanks largely to a strong defense line of Bara. Bara goalkeeper Asha Sitaula also made a spectacular save to prevent Priti Chaudhary from scoring in the early second half.
Bara would have added at least one more goal had Sapana Basnet not ended up hitting wide from the six-yard box in the dying moments of the match. Bara will now take on Friday’s winners of the match between Nepal Police Club and Dhankuta in Monday’s quarter-final.
In Chandranigahapur, Sapana Lama scored a second half brace as Rautahat thrashed newcomers Taplejung 4-0. Renuka Nagarkoti and Roshani Rakhal struck one each for the local side.
After a barren first half, Renuka put the co-hosts ahead in the 51st minute. Sapana doubled the tally in the 61st before making it 3-0 in the 71st minute. Roshani ended any remaining comeback chances of Taplejung scoring the team's fourth goal in the 75th minute.
