KATHMANDU: Women’s Rehabilitation Centre, a non-governmental organisation lobbying for women’s rights, today urged members of the Constituent Assembly and political parties to prepare a gender-friendly constitution on time.
Political leaders have failed to work as per the popular mandate to end the transitional phase as more women are becoming victims of gender-based violence, said the centre in a statement.
In its report for the period between mid-April to mid-May, the organisation said that it recorded 105 cases of gender-based violence –– 53 of which were related to domestic violence. Likewise, it recorded nine murder cases and two attempts to murder during the period.
A total of 20 women were subjected to social violence –– six of them were accused of practicing witchcraft, three were tortured mentally and five manhandled –– during 30 days. The centre recorded ten cases of rape, one of attempt to rape and four cases gang rape, in the same period.
