PARBAT: The District Alliance for Health Rights and Tobacco Control has called for a ban on the production and consumption of tobacco-based products.
The alliance organised a demonstration today to press the government to introduce and enforce laws against tobacco consumption.
According to the alliance, 171 countries have already ratified the International Convention against Illicit Trade in Tobacco. It said tobacco consumption kills over five million people the world over every year.
The alliance has sent a seven-point memorandum to the Prime Minister through the District Administration Office. The memorandum calls for effective enforcement of laws to prevent tobacco consumption and provisions of subsidy for tobacco farmers to switch to alternatives.
Alliance for Health Rights and Tobacco Substance Control and Primary Health Service Source Centre also organised a rally in Dhading district, seeking laws to ban the production and consumption of tobacco-based substances.
