BIRATNAGAR: Around 500 child labourers of Biratnagar and surrounding areas today staged a peaceful rally against the protracted bandhs that prevented them from pursuing education.

They started the rally from Biratnagar’s Mahendra Chowk and marched through the market area before converging in Mahendranagar, where they sat and read for an hour.

The District Child Club Network, Area Child Club Network and Labourer Child Club Area Coordination Committee have jointly staged a rally in collaboration with organisations working for child labourers area, Women Awareness Front and different organisations working for the upliftment of women and children.

Labourer Child Club Area Coordination Committee’s chairperson Manisha Karki said the right to education of the children has been denied by frequent strikes. She said, “We have such children who work in others’ houses and go to school as well. It is really sad that we are unable to provide them the necessary environment to pursue studies even during leisure hours.”

Child friendly source of Biratnagar Sub-municipality Dilli Dhimal said the step taken by the children was admirable.

Educational institutions of Biratnagar have been formally closed since nine days due to strikes called by various groups.

There are 2,781 child labourers in Biratnagar, said a report.
