SINDHUPALCHOWK: District court of Nawalparasi today granted the police seven days to investigate the alleged involvement of former Maoist fighter Sirkaji Tamang in an explosion near the site of a Maoist meeting attended by Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun in Jalbire on Saturday.
Of the three arrested, police freed Daba Lama of Golche and Sanjiv BK of Pulpingkot today. Twenty-three-year-old Tamang claimed he stayed at Shaktikhor Maoist cantonment for two-and-half years before leaving after being disqualified during UNMIN verification. Tamang, who still claims he is a Maoist cadre, denied involvement in the blast. “I came to participate in the programme and didn’t plant any bomb,” he said. Police, however, are said to have almost concluded that Tamang was involved in the blast, and are now investigating involvement of other persons. If proved guilty, Tamang will have to face a two-year jail term or Rs 20,000 fine or both.
On Saturday, an improvised explosive had gone off just about 50 metres from a Maoist meeting site at Ananda Higher Secondary School in Jalbire. Police had arrested three persons suspecting their hand in the incident. Maoist district leader Madhav Sapkota, however, had accused Nepali Congress cadres of carrying out the explosion because he said they were miffed at some of the cadres joining the Maoist party.
