KATHMANDU: Does your couch look dull and unattractive? Do you want to accessorise them? Then go for cushions. These decorative cushions will give a complete look to your living room and is one of the minor luxuries of life.

Cushion for home decor

Cushion, a puffy soft bag filled with fibre, cotton and feathers are used for interior decoration of your living room. Though called a minor luxury, it is one of the complex pieces of décor. You need to combine the colour of the room, your couch and the cushions smartly, so that it reflects you and your design style.

Ruchi Agarawal, owner of Monika Home Decor said, “You can always buy cushions with bold patterns if your couch is dark coloured or you can go for the embellished cushions which add a wow factor to your couch. Be creative and combine different colours, textures and patterns.”

Scattering cushions and decorative pillows on your couches and beds give a creative look to your interior. According to a homemaker, Indira Khakurel, the beauty of cushions is affordable and is luxurious at the same time. “Old couches get a new look with these cushions but you must consider changing them at times. You can be more creative and change it according to the colour and pattern of the season,” she suggested.

of cushions. In most of the cushions, fibre is used as a filling whereas some even choose cushions made of cotton.

“Unlike cotton cushions, cushions filled with fibre do not deflate and are washable,” added Agarawal.

However, Chandra Shrestha, who owns Suraj Cloth Center at China Town said, “We give two years guarantee in the cushions. If they fluffiness is gone, we remake it.”

In addition, the ruffled, embellished and beautifully designed cushion covers are available in different varieties in the market made of cotton, raw silk, polyester, leather, satin, jute, tissue, velvet et cetera. You can even opt for cushions, which have cartoons and floral prints for the room of your little ones.

According to your preference, you can go for cushion covers with zipper, one that matches the fabric colour or an envelope-back cover. Available in eclectic shapes like round, rectangular, heart and square, you can select any variety depending on individual design choice and style of couch.

Increasing trend

Made in Nepal and some imported from India and China too, these cushions have gained popularity and can be found on anyone’s sofa and living room these days. The stores offer you wide varieties in designs and fabric to choose. According to Rohini Shrestha, owner of Shop 17, KJ Complex, Makhan, “Velvet cushion covers are high in demand among the middle class customers. For occasional use, people buy covers made of tissue which are delicate and expensive.”

As per Agarawal, leather and raw silk are in higher demand as they give a sophisticated look to your couch.

Deepa Karmacharya from Dhapasi was trying to find jute cushion covers for her low bed. “These covers look beautiful and will blend with my couch and the interiors. I am also buying some to send it abroad for my aunt,” she said.

Cushions for comfort

Cushions are not only a decorative piece but add comfort to your lifestyle too. It keeps you at ease. It is an important accessory for your bed, low bed, sofa, and couch and even for vehicles.

It can be used anywhere as per your comfort. If you are sitting on a hard surface or sitting with your back placed on the wall, take a cushion and feel comfortable.

“My living room, my bedroom and my car is full of cushions. It can transform a hard seat into soft and comfortable one. I want my guests to feel comfortable while they sit and moreover, my daughter loves to hold it while sleeping,” said Neha Dharel of Gongabu.
