KATHMANDU: World Press Freedom Day is being marked today around the world to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom.

In Nepal also, journalists are geared up to organise various programmes to evaluate the status of press freedom in the country and to defend the media from unneeded interventions and attacks.

It has been learnt that the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) has organised an assembly at Bhrikutimandap to cherish the “freedom of expression” enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

FNJ is also scheduled to meet the big guns today and press for the press freedom and press security, said FNJ member Balkrishna Basnet.

Meanwhile on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Press Chautari Nepal will present the Hridaya Chandra Singh Pradhan Memorial Prize to writer Bimal Nibha of Kathmandu, the Agnishikha Memorial Journalism Prize to Kamal Prasad Koirala of Morang and Birendra Shah Creative Youth Journalism Award to Ramesh Chandra Adhikari of Dhankuta, according to General Secretary of Press Chautari Bishnu Rijal.

Notably, the United Nations General-Assembly declared 3rd May as the World Press Freedom Day in 1993, following the recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference.

Eynulla Fatullayev, an Azerbaijani Journalist and human right activist is named the winner of the 2012 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
