Death toll climbs to 39‚ many of them 'Indian pilgrims'

NAWALPARASI: Death toll in the bus accident in Triveni of Nawalparasi has climbed to 39 as more bodies have been retrieved from the Gandak canal on Sunday late afternoon.

According to the police, 28 men, 10 women and one minor girl are among the victims whose bodies have been found so far. Earlier it was reported that 40 bodies were found.

Police suspected that many of the victims could be Indian nationals who were heading to Triveni for the Bol Bam pilgrimage. However, the victims are yet to be identified.

The massive casualties occured as a jampacked ferrying pilgrims veered off the road and plunged into the Gandak canal near India-Nepal border in Nawalparasi earlier today.

The rescue operation is underway.
