OKHALDHUNGA: People, especially those in dire need of seeing doctor for critical disease in the district, have been bearing the brunt of delay in blacktopping of the Rumjatar Airport.

As the contractor to blacktop the Airport left the work in the middle despite initiating it for seven months, the people are bound to make costly treatment by chartering helicopter.

The recent case is of Shankar Wagle from Kuntadevi VDC. He had to send his daughter to Kathmandu a week ago because there was no treatment available in the district hospitals. He then had no option but to charter a helicopter.

Now, people from the district in dire need of treatment need helicopter at least three to four times a month. It is not because they can easily afford but they have no alternative at all to ferry the patients referred to Kathmandu.

It takes Rs 90,000 to Rs 120,000 to charter the helicopter.

Meanwhile, those unable to meet this cost have been deprived of treatment, and waiting death, said Guna Raj Sharma from Mamkha village.

The contractor almost deserted the work in the middle at Rumjatar, say the locals.

On the other hand, the district, though linked by the Siddhicharan Highway, lacks safe roadway. Because there is no bridge over the Sunkoshi River, the transportation is neither safe nor comfortable.

The contractor left the blacktopping of the Airport four months back, reasoning the materials for the work were all substandard.

As per the contract made a year ago, the blacktopping was to be complete this month (Bhadra).
