KATHMANDU: Rising young sensation Dipesh Dhami stunned defending champion and top seed Bikash Shrestha to enter the final of the second Pushpalal Memorial National Ranking Badminton Tournament here today.

Dipesh — who underwent 10-day training at the BAC Asian Development Team Training Camp in China from June 19 to July 1 this year — used his experience to labour past the Nepal No 1 Bikash 21-14, 18-21 and 21-18 in an intense battle at the NSC covered hall. The six seeded Dipesh will take on Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) shuttler Ratna Jit Tamang in the final.

Second seed Ratna survived a tough first-set challenge from seventh seeded Sahadev Khadka of Kailali before winning 22-24, 21-13 and 21-12. The Tamang family was over the moon after Ratna’s sisters Sara Devi of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) and Nangsal Devi of APF entered the women’s singles final.

Defending champion and eighth seed Sara fought back from a set down to defeat Sabina Panthi of APF 16-21, 21-6, 21-9, while Nangsal eased past Poonam Gurung of Kaski 21-12, 21-7. Jhapa duo of Jesica Gurung and Sunaina Mukhiya entered the U-15 girls’ singles final. Jesica laboured past Hemakhya Rai 26-24, 21-14 and Sunaina saw off Tial Neupane 21-18, 21-14.

Likewise, Nabin Shrestha of Bhojpur and Ganesh Rayamajhi of Nepal Police School set the U-15 boys’ singles final date. Nabin took no time in beating Riyaj Ansari of Banke 21-9, 21-13, while Ganesh made it to the final with ease after his opponent Bishal Moktan of Bhojpur pulled out due to illness.
