CHITWAN: A group of disqualified combatants barged into the PLA cantonment here in the district and disrupted the process of regrouping of former Maoist fighters.
About two dozen of the intruders have been detained.
Earlier, the disabled and injured fighters had expressed their reservation on the process and demanded that their concerns be addressed first before the cantonment was shut down. Likewise, the Maoist fighters had expressed their concern over the
“Now, there are problems in the process due to security threat also,” Balananda Sharma, the coordinator of Special Committee Secretariat, said.
As per the decision of Special Committee (for supervision, integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants), the remaining Maoist fighters will have to be categorised on the basis of their preference to be part of army integration or rehabilitation by April 12.
The former combatants will be either sent to the Nepali Army for integration or their home with rehabilitation package and all the cantonments will be shut down.
Meanwhile, it has been understood that Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has directed the Special Committee to put the regrouping process on hold this afternoon after tension ran high at various cantonments across the country.
