Dom community still faces discrimination

RAJBIRAJ: Dom Ethnic Community today said the caste based discrimination was still prevalent in the society.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Samata Foundation in Rajbiraj, the president of Dom Utthan Society, Yukti Lal Marik said that the discriminatory practices against them were still practiced even today.

The plight of Dalit and Doms, the most marginalised community in the society, has not improved, he said adding that they were not only discriminated in the community but in police administration, schools and hospitals.

Even today, school desks and benches are separated for Dalit children and the police administration barely takes our cases seriously, Ram Chandra Mallik of Siraha said.

Stating that there was a big discrimination in employment sector, Dalit leader Bala Dev Marik said that they were lagging behind from other castes in every aspect be it social, economical or political.

Of the total country’s population, Dom community constitute of 0.4 per cent, who mainly lives in the eastern part of the country like Saptari, Siraha, Sunsari, Morang, Dhanusha, Mahotari, Rautahat, Sarlahi and Parsha.
