BIRGUNJ: A public awareness campaign has been launched in the rural areas of Parsa district to make the area free from drugs.
The campaign was launched in Subarnapur VDC on Tuesday by an NGO called Sano Paila (Small Step) with the support of District Administration and District Police Office. As part of the campaign, locals are being informed about the harms of drug abuse.
At the programme, participants urged locals to grow cash crops like potato, sugarcane, mustard and tobacco rather than marijuana and opium. They said the activities of criminal groups, drug and weapons peddlers is rising in the district because of the bad name the district has earned in farming of marijuana and opium.
Chief District Officer Nagendra Jha and SP Rajendraman Shrestha said the administration will be compelled to take strong action against people who grow opium and marijuana. Growing such crops is illegal in Nepal.
On the occasion, the NGO screened a documentary and staged a street play to raise awareness among the people against drug addiction as well as farming of drug crops.
