KATHMANDU:Delays in the allocation of portfolios to newly-appointed ministers has led to the cancellation of Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha’s scheduled visit to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. As per an earlier plan, Shrestha was supposed to leave for Egypt on Tuesday morning in the capacity of foreign minister to attend a foreign ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), a forum of 120 countries. Today, DPM Shrestha decided not to leave for Egypt, his personal aide Susan Karmacharya confirmed.
Sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) told THT that DPM Shrestha would have left for the Egyptian tourist city if he had landed the foreign ministry berth today.
In Shrestha’s absence, Foreign Secretary Durga Prasad Bhattarai will lead the Nepali delegation to the ministerial meeting, which will set the agenda for the upcoming NAM Summit slated for Iran in August. Leading a three-member MoFA team, Secretary Bhattarai left for Egypt yesterday to make necessary preparations for the meet.
