KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Energy Minister Radha Gyawali today said she will not adopt a policy of zero tolerance against corruption in the Energy Ministry. At a programme organised to welcome her, Gyawali said, “I have heard that corruption is rampant in the ministry. During my tenure, I promise to take the matter seriously.”

Gyawali said the system governing the issuance of licence to hydropower producers is very unmanaged and those with power and ability to influence policymakers have captured the rivers without bothering to generate power. The ministry will introduce a policy that encourages the generation of energy, she said.

Energy Secretary Hari Ram Koirala said lack of monitoring of projects and fair evaluation of work is also to blame for the energy crisis. “We issue licence to developers but lack an effective monitoring and evaluation system. This has delayed hydropower projects resulting in hourslong power outage,” Koirala said.
