Ex-jail cells serve as artist studios in Detroit

DETROIT: An arts organization in Detroit has set up shop in a former Detroit Police Department station, where 5-by-9-foot jail cells now are being used as artist studios.

555 Nonprofit Gallery and Studios moved into its new home this year. The city closed the building in 2005 as part of a department-wide reorganization, and the former lobby now is an airy gallery. Detectives' offices now are classroom and studio space. And cells with bars still on their doors are places for creativity.

The Third Precinct renovation is one of a handful of projects nationwide converting old police facilities, including one in Chicago that's becoming live theater venues and one in Philadelphia that's becoming living space. They strike a balance between preserving a building's past and focusing on its future.
