MAHENDRANAGAR: The far-west region has virtually ground to a halt for the last six days.
A strike first enforced on April 27 by different organisations to oppose Unified CPN-Maoist’s proposal to what protesters call divide far-west entered the sixth day today.
Supporters of undivided far-west and those seeking inclusion of the Tharuhat state in Kanchanpur district took out separate rallies today, bringing transport services across the region to a grinding halt.
Those travelling through the region are bearing the brunt of the strike.
Pyuthan’s Anuram Pun works in Punjab of India. He and his family arrived in Mahendranagar three days ago. Pun has the urgency to reach his home district to attend a puja, but Pun and family are stranded in Mahendranagar, thanks to the ongoing bandh. Dadeldhura’s Hansa Saud must reach his home at the earliest as he has scheduled his daughter’s marriage for May 5. He is at his wit’s end. “I am stuck here,” complained a frantic Saud. “I don’t know how am I going to reach home?”
For Anuram, each day is getting worse. “The money I have spent for food and lodging in Mahendranagar would have been more than enough to reach home,” said Anuram.
And there are others who are paying the price for what they never bargained for. As many as 145 people who were on a pilgrimage to India are biding their time for the bandh to be called off. Badri Hamal, one of the pilgrims, said more than 100 of them are elderly. “Some have even fallen sick,” he said.
Running out of patience, stranded passengers today staged a sit-in in front of Kanchanpur District Administration Office demanding that the authorities concerned do the needful to bail them out of the uncalled for difficulty. They demanded that the government escort them to their destinations. With no solution in sight, some even have begun their journey on foot.
Bandh enforcers today took out rallies in Dhangadhi, Attariya and Tikapur of Kailali and burned 22 Maoist CA lawmakers in effigies. In Doti, bandh enforcers vandalised a truck and jeep and padlocked Doti DAO Doti.
