Farmers attracted to kiwi fruit farming in Ilam

MANGALBARE: Tek Bahadur Bista of Sankhejung -7 has been renowned as a leading farmer of kiwi fruit farming in the district.

Four years ago, when he planted kiwi spending hundreds of thousands of rupees, people did not like it although very few appreciated. But now he has been a role model for farmers from far and near as they see clusters of kiwi growing in his farm.

Last year, Bista earned more than Rs. 300,000 by producing five quintals of kiwi. This year, he expects Rs. 1.2 million. Last year, he grew four quintals and this year it is expected to be more than 30 quintals.

Earlier engaged in tea and cow rearing, Bista has been attracted to kiwi farming now. Many farmers are planting it. He had spent Rs. 300,000 to plant sapling and to erect supports.

JB Mukhiya of Paschim Lumde who planted the largest number of kiwi in the district is also producing the fruit from this year. He has 578 plants in his farm.

Puran Gurung of Maimajhuwa also expects considerable income from this year, so is Taramani Khatiwada of Sulubung as the farming spreads to various VDCs of the district.
