DAHABAN: In what was once the heartland of Maoist insurgency in Nepal, Sher Jung Dangi, a former guerrilla, now sees himself joining the Nepali Army, the fighters’ main adversary during the decade-long war.
“I am preparing to join the NA,” said the former rebel. “We fought for the country in the past and that is what we will do as members of the army.” Dangi is among the former PLA fighters based in Rolpa, where the insurgents declared war against the state by attacking police. Fourteen years on, the NA is providing security to the
fighters at the Fifth Division in Dahaban, Rolpa.
Acting sub-commander of the Division Raj Bahadur Budha said PLA have not surrendered. The people want peace and constitution. How could this be a surrender?” he said.
A Lt Col of Nepali Army said that they were preparing to train fighters, who are to join the army at Libang-based Devidutta Battalion, and facilities in Tulsipur and Chandrauta.
