SIRAHA: More than 250 houses and sheds of 85 families were gutted at Shivanagar of Bariyapatti VDC-8 of Siraha district on Saturday.
The fire started after a straw heap belonging to Jogan Yadav caught fire.
District Police Office Siraha said the fire spread and could not be controlled due to the wind.
The fire was brought under control at around 5:00 pm with the help of fire engines from Lahan and Rajbiraj. Locals had tried to douse the fire by drawing water from two local ponds with pump sets, but in vain.
According to local Sanjaya Yadav, the straw heap caught fire after someone threw a piece of burning fire wood from Jogan’s hearth. The fire then spread to other houses. He added’’ We could not stop the fire due to the strong wind.’’ According to Shiva Narayan Yadav, sub-Inspector at border police post Bariyarpatti, Ekasundari Yadav (45) and three children have suffered burn injuries. The fire had caused stampede in the village. The injured are receiving treatment at Lahan hospital. It has been estimated that property worth about Rs 10 crore including cash, foodstuffs and ornaments was destroyed in the fire.
The members of 85 families have been left in a lurch.
The victims are living on the open ground without food. Social worker at Madar Santosh Kumar Agrawal distributed beaten rice, sugar and biscuits to the victims.
CDO Dhurba Prasad Dhakal informed that the administration has been collecting data on the loss, adding, “Police have been deployed at the incident site to collect data and the administration office will deploy a team to distribute relief to the victims from tomorrow.”
