KATHMANDU: The day of June 15 was quite unique for around 40 street children of Thamel as they got a whole new experience of dining in a luxury hotel.

The meal was provided at the poolside garden of Hotel de l’ Annapurna for these children. Fifteen-year-old Suraj Maharjan happily expressed, “I am having a wonderful time. The food is delicious and I am very happy to be here.”

Besides eating, the children were also “taught to behave. Teachers teach us drawing as well,” said Maharjan. The initiation to provide a meal to the street children was taken by the NGO Smile Nepal together with Annapurna.

The hotel had invited these children to dine there. But providing meal to these children is not limited for just one day.

Shreejana Rana, CSR Director of the hotel informed, “Our hotel in association with Smile Nepal, has been providing one full meal to these children every day for the past eight months.” And this is one of the steps taken by the hotel as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. Sharing their experience of working with these children, Anu Pant, Vice President of Smile Nepal revealed, “It was very difficult to handle these children initially.”

However, now she feels “there has been a dramatic positive change in their behaviour and attitude”.

And just providing these children with meals is not their only target. “We are gradually taking them to rehabilitation centre Richmond Fellowship and we want them to live dignified life independently,” Pant expressed.
