AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE

CAIRO: Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Sunday, killing two officers and wounding another, a security official told AFP.

The gunmen opened fire on the checkpoint near the town of Al-Arish, instantly killing policemen Mohammed Fawzi and Mohammed Mosleh, both 21.

Another officer was seriously injured, the official said, adding that several gunmen were also wounded in the ensuing exchange of fire but managed to escape.

Security forces are sweeping the area in search of the gunmen, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Egypt has been gripped by security-related problems since a popular uprising toppled president Hosni Mubarak last year.

The problem is worse in the Sinai Peninsula where the Bedouin population is heavily armed.
