KATHMANDU: Actress and activist Joanna Lumley has arrived in Nepal on Monday as the Vice-Patron of the Gurkha Welfare Trust British Embassy in Kathmandu confirmed.
During her stay in Nepal, the 65-year-old star British actress will be heading to the country's western hills to open a school built under the supervision of the British-based Gurkha Welfare Trust.
The Gurkha Welfare Trust, a charity funded largely by public subscription in the UK, helps retired British Gurkhas, their families and communities.
The Trust’s work, also embraces Individual Aid, Community Aid and Medical Support and it made Lumley to make a Nepal trip.
Lumley is best known for her roles in British television series Absolutely Fabulous.
She earns the adoration of the Gurkhas after having led a successful campaign for Gurkhas' rights and their families to be allowed to settle in Britain.

Is she still with you Nabina Limbu ? Perhaps you would like to keep her there and she could encourage all the Gurkhas she lied to to go back home and help her do something for their folk . ANNE , HAMPSHIRE UK

I don't understand why the ex-Gurkhas are going out of Nepal. Here, they live like little kings-boasting of their bravery and prosperity. In the UK,no one cares about them but as blady refugees.Guys, time to return back and extend your helping hands.Don't you see that Nepal desperately needs you??? Great to see how she cares so much for the nepalese ..maybe she might like to come and see the problems she has caused in both Aldershot and Farnborough and how miserable the now settled Nepalese (ex gurkhas ) have made themselves and the local residents ie high costs of living here , lack of employment , increase in TB etc .... I don't know what life is like in Nepal but I do wonder what kind of life ex-Gurkhas and their families have been told they can lead if they moved to the UK. You can be sure their lives here will be nothing like the exclusive world Joanna Lumley lives in. If you come to Aldershot you will live cheek by jowl in small apartments alongside people from Pakistan, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Somalia, India, Poland and any number of other countries who tolerate each other but have no need or desire to assimilate. Another comment says you have status and wealth in Nepal, you will have neither here. Life is very, very expensive for everybody, including most British. Yes, there are nice parts of the UK and most British people are pleasant and tolerant, but in recent years this has been pushed to the limits by politicians who have been happy to allow anybody from across the world to live in the UK, regardless of their loyalty or contribution. Around 22,000 elderly UK citizens die each winter because they cannot afford the cost of heat for their homes. It is definitely not the land of riches and you will just be another face in a lost crowd, and I speak as an Aldershot citizen. Hopefully you also won't mind lots of rain, dark clouds and long winter nights too! Danny Boys, Aldershot, UK
