UDAYPUR: ‘A’ Division outfit Yeti Himalayan Sherpa Club got off to a triumphant start in the second Udayapur Gold Cup football tournament that began here today.

In the inaugural day match, Himalayan Sherpa knocked out defending champions Knight Chess Club of Jhapa 3-1. After Yugal Kishore Rai failed to put Knight Chess ahead early in the game with his powerful shot rebounding off the woodwork, Jas Bahadur Rai opened the account for Himalayan Sherpa with a goal in the 14th minute.

Hope Rally then made sure the Kathmandu-based team goes into the second half with a two-goal cushion striking two minutes before the interval.

Rally superbly converted a corner kick from Pukar Gahatraj with a fine header. Another African recruit Samuel put the issue beyond doubt for Himalayan Sherpa through a penalty in the 75th minute.

Himalayan Sherpa were awarded the penalty after Knight Chess goalkeeper tripped Dhiraj Tamang inside the area. Bikram Budhathoki pulled one back for Knight Chess in the 79th minute but by then it was too late for the holders to stage a comeback.

Knight Chess created goalscoring chances frequently but poor finishing cost them the match. Jas Bahadur was declared the man-of-the-match. On Saturday, another ‘A’ Division club Nepal APF will take on Rastriya Jana Jagriti Club of Sunsari. Earlier, National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama inaugurated the tournament.
