KATHMANDU: The government has passed the Integration Work Plan 2012 to integrate the Unified CPN (Maoist) former combatants into the Nepal Army.
The meeting of the Council of Ministers, today, passed the work plan for making all necessary preparation for the integration of the Maoist combatants, said Minister for Finance, Barshaman Pun.
Similarly, the meeting decided to form the General Directorate that will remain under Nepal Army. Provisions have been made for establishing four Directorates under the General Directorate. They are the National Development Directorate, the Industrial Security Directorate, the Forest and Forest Resources Security Directorate, and the Disaster Management Directorate. The General Directorate will have 6,500 Maoist combatants.
Minister Pun said the General Directorate will take forward the integration process based on the political understanding made at various times in the past and as per the decision of the Special Committee on Supervision Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist combatants.
He added that the Cabinet has made the work plan as per the Special Committee's decision on Saturday. The Cabinet meeting passed the work plan based on the Special Committee's decision. The Committee decided to form two separate selection committees- one coordinated by Chairman of the Public Service Commission or a person nominated by him and the other coordinated by an NA Officer.
The committee coordinated by the PSC chairman will carry out the selection process for the officer-level combatants while the one coordinated by the NA officer will carry out the selection process for combatants other than the officer-level.
The Cabinet meeting also called on all political parties to focus their activities on constitution writing as the peace process has taken a positive turn.
According to Pun, the government similarly urged the civil society, journalists, intellectuals and others to support the constitution writing process.
