Intellectuals blast parties‚ media

LAHAN: Intellectuals today came down heavily on the political parties, media and the government for not making concrete efforts to empower the Tharu community.
They were speaking at a Tharu NGO Federation-organised workshop on the ‘Rights of Indigenous Nationalities and Inclusion’. Tharu intellectual Shambhu Lal Chaudhary demanded that all sides make a pledge to guarantee the rights of the Tharu community, while lawmaker Laxman Mehata stressed the need to focus on the constitution-drafting process. Hari Narayan Chaudhary of the UCPN-Maoist said protecting rights of the communities will be impossible in the event of failure to promulgate the statute on time.
Journalist Santos Subedi said the onus is on journalists to press all concerned to complete peace and statute-drafting processes.
