KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala today appointed 61 Central Working Committee (CWC) members and two office bearers in the party’s important portfolios.

Although he was supposed to make those appointments within two months after the party’s general convention as per the party statute, it took him nearly two years after he was elected party president from the 12th general convention in September 2010.

Koirala had put the appointments on hold after he failed to satisfy his own supporters and his rival faction led by senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba for the internal power sharing.

Deuba faction’s leader Bimalendra Nidhi said that Deuba was not consulted before making the nominations. “We were informed about it from the media. It is regretful and against the spirit of party unity,” Nidhi said.

Koirala was widely criticised for his inability to make the appointments until the long time as the party’s departments and committees, which are under the CWC, are responsible to make the party activities vibrant and active.

He nominated today heads of 42 departments, 14 zonal committees, two Central Directive Committees (CWCs) for holding the fresh general conventions of the party’s sister wings, one spokesperson, one CWC member and head of Kathmandu valley coordination committee.

The two CDCs coordinated by party general secretaries Prakash Man Singh and Krishna Prasad Sitaula are compulsorily mandated to hold the sister wings’ conventions within next three months (mid-October).

The Singh-led committee is mandated to assist and issue directives to Nepal Student Union, Nepal Adibasi Janajati Sangh, Nepal Kishan Sangh and Nepal Rastriya Maghar Sangh. CWC member Badri Pandey has been appointed member of the committee.

Sitaula-led committee will discharge the responsibility for the Nepal Tarun Dal, Nepal Mahila Sangh and Nepal Prajatantra Senani Sangh. CWC member Kamala Panta has been appointed its member. One member each to the two committees is yet to be nominated. The party’s concerned department chiefs will be the ex-officio members of both the committees.

Koirala appointed CWC member Dilendra Prasad Badu as the party’s spokesperson and CWC member Ram Krishna Tamrakar as Kathmandu valley coordination committee.

Baburam Rana of Rupandehi has been nominated as the party’s CWC member. Koirala is yet to nominate party’s co-general secretary, four more CWC members and members of the departments and zonal committees.

Parliamentary board responsible to name candidates in national general elections and some other committees including disciplinary committees are also yet to be formed.
