PONTE VEDRA BEACH: American Matt Kuchar won The Players Championship by two shots on Sunday. Kuchar closed with a two-under 70 to finish at 13-under 275 for his fourth win on the USPGA Tour. Martin Laird shared second place at 11-under 277 with Zach Johnson (68), Ben Curtis (68) and Rickie Fowler (70).

Federer lifts trophy

MADRID: Roger Federer put his best fighting tennis on display to produce a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Tomas Berdych on Sunday to win a third Madrid Masters title and depose Rafael Nadal as world No 2. The Swiss, with 16 Grand Slam titles, will stand behind Novak Djokovic on the ATP list after sending Nadal back to third with the performance.
