BIRGUNJ: An unidentified group today gunned down a local leader aligned to Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Nepal at Murali Chowk in Birgunj.
Ramakant Mandal, General Secretary of MJF-N-aligned Madhesi Workers’ Forum, was shot dead in front of Agriculture Inputs Corporation.
Two men on a motorcycle, licence number of which is yet to be ascertained, had opened fire on Mandal in front of the gate of AIC where he had gone to discuss fertilisers. The assailants had fired three rounds of bullet — two hit Mandal on his chest and his left arm and third went off-target.
Mandal, from Lalparsa VDC, Parsa, was rushed to Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital. “But he had already succumbed to the bullet injury on his chest after excessive bleeding,” said doctors.
Suresh Mahato, who had accompanied Mandal to AIC, said the attackers fled towards south immediately after attacking Mandal.
Parsa DSP Diwas Lohani suspected that professional criminal groups could be behind the murder. “We have launched an investigation,” said DSP Lohani.
Later today, MJF-N organised a protest rally and condemned the killing of its leader. MJF-N demanded that the government declare Mandal a martyr and pay compensation to his family. Parsa chairman of MJF-N Pradip Yadav said the broad day light killing has once again exposed the lax security in the region.
