YANGON: More than 20 political activists have been detained across Myanmar ahead of a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of a brutal military crackdown on students.

Kyaw Ko Ko, leader of the All Burma Federation of Students Union, says 23 people were arrested in the crackdown, which began Friday night.

Another leading activist, Ko Ko Kyi, says those detained are expected to be released later Saturday.

Kyaw Ko Ko says the detainees include several activists who were freed from prison in January under an amnesty for political prisoners. The amnesty was part of the liberalization policies initiated by the government of President Thein Sein to promote political reconciliation.

On July 7, 1962, the army staged a bloody crackdown against students protesting the military regime that had taken power four months earlier.
