KATHMANDU: Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) felicitated the winners of the Popular Player of the Year category of the Pulsar Sports Award, organised by the Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF), here today.
Volleyball completed a hat-trick in the category with Ramila Tandukar winning the award at the Nepal Academy Hall on July 4. Earlier, Manju Gurung had won the award in 2008 followed by Sipora Gurung two years later. NVA awarded the trio with Rs 5,000 each and letters of appreciation.
NSC Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama handed over the awards to the spikers. NVA President Dan Bahadur Tamang among other NVA officials were also present on the occasion. Sipora did not attend the programme. Manju thanked both the NSJF and NVA for their support. “We are thankful to both the organisations. The award will encourage us to do better in future,” said Manju. She also urged the volleyball governing body to organise more tournaments.
NVA President Tamang said the three players had proved the popularity of the game. “It is a matter of pride for the volleyball family. It shows the popularity of this game,” said Tamang. “Moreover, volleyball has won the award on all three occasions when there was a nominee from this sport,” added Tamang. Member Secretary Lama said the sports governing body was expecting more from the newly elected NVA body. “We have seen some changes in volleyball after the election, but it is not sufficient,” added Lama.
