KATHMANDU: National Campus won the title of the first Bir Ganesh Man Memorial Inter-college (+2) Basketball Tournament here today.
In the final match held at the National Sports Council covered hall, National defeated title favourites Golden Gate International College ‘A’ 64-47 that saw them finish the tournament unbeaten. Along with the title, National grabbed a purse of Rs 20,000, while Golden Gate took home Rs 10,000.
Golden Gate took a 12-6 lead in the first quarter and maintained it throughout the match. They scored nine points in the second period when Golden Gate could only add eight.
With seven-point lead going into the third quarter, National added another 19 points and when Golden Gate only managed 11 during that period, the eventual winners could already sniff victory going 14 points in front.
Though Golden Gate put a tough fight in the decider, National went on to lead the final quarter 24-22. National’s victory also overshadowed the match-high 23-point contribution from Ajay Nepali for Golden Gate. Shashwat Bikram Singh top scored for the champions with 16 points. Chhiring Sherpa of National was adjudged the MVP of the tournament and received Rs 5,000.
United Academy were declared the Fair Play Team. Nepali Congress General Secretary Prakash Man Singh and youth leader Gagan Thapa among others handed over prizes to the winners. In all 24 teams participated in the 13-day tournament organised by Nepal Student’s Union of Kathmandu District Region-IV.
The organisers also feted senior photo journalist Shyam Chitrakar and National Sports Council office bearer Sanu Kaji Maharjan after the final.
