Arsenal clinch deal
LONDON: Arsenal clinched a last-minute deal for Spanish international left back Nacho Monreal from Malaga on Thursday. The 26-year-old signed a long-term contract with the Gunners shortly before the transfer window closed, according to the Premier League club’s website. Monreal, who has nine Spain caps and played at Malaga with Arsenal’s Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla, will strengthen manager Arsene Wenger’s options in defence after Kieran Gibbs was injured against Liverpool on Wednesday. Replacement left back Andre Santos has struggled this season, leading to Wenger moving for the experienced Monreal as Arsenal push for a top-four finish.
Cuenca loaned out
BARCELONA: Barcelona said that winger Isaac Cuenca has joined Dutch club Ajax on loan until the end of the season. Barca announced the deal just before the end of the winter transfer market on Thursday. The 21-year-old Cuenca had a breakthrough season last year, but he had not played this season after being sidelined with a long-term leg injury until recently. Barcelona said that the loan agreement does not include the option for Ajax to purchase Cuenca.
FA spares Hazard
LONDON: Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard’s three-match ban for kicking a ballboy will not be extended, the Football Association (FA) said on Thursday. Hazard was charged by the FA following his bizarre sending off for violent conduct in the second leg of Chelsea’s League Cup semi-final defeat by Swansea City last week. The Belgian international kicked the teenager while trying to get the ball as the ballboy laid on top of it. Hazard received an automatic three-match ban for his 78th-minute red card but faced the possibility of a longer suspension.
